The Voice’s Bluesy Rock n Roller, Lane Mack

Lane Mack has performed at SXSW and Jazz Fest, but to millions of viewers he is best known for appearing on NBC’s The Voice in 2016. Growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana, Lane was surrounded by a community of skilled musicians, including his uncle Roddie Romero, a Grammy-nominated zydeco artist, and the region has left its mark on Lane as he has refined his sound over the years.

His latest EP,  Swampodisiac, made it to the #2 slot on the iTunes blues chart shortly after it was released on Sept. 19, 2017. As the title suggests, the EP is a swamp-infused concoction of unvarnished blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

Director of Sidemen, Award-Winning Blues Doc: Scott Rosenbaum

Sidemen: Long Road to Glory is a music documentary that premiered at this year’s SXSW, was well received at Louisiana International Film Festival and Bonnaroo, and won the Special Jury Prize at the Nashville Film Festival. The film tells the story of Pinetop Perkins, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, and Hubert Sumlin, three musicians who played in the bands of legendary bluesmen Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf.

By the end of their lives, the three men profiled in the film became legends in their own right. Pinetop Perkins and Willie Smith would go on to win Grammys in 2011 for their album Joined at the Hip, and there is an active campaign to induct Hubert Sumlin into Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a campaign that includes signatures from the likes of Buddy Guy and B.B. King. (Fun fact: Pinetop Perkins is currently the oldest musician to receive a Grammy.)

Archival footage and animated sequences in the film span the careers of Pinetop Perkins, Willie Smith, and Hubert Sumlin.

The documentary also includes interviews with members of The Doors, The Allman Brothers, Aerosmith, The Dave Matthews Band, as well as with artists like Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Winter, Bobby Rush and more, all of whom talk about the influence of the three sidemen on their music.

The director of the film, Scott Rosenbaum, came on the podcast to discuss the film and the seven-year process that it took to get made. We discuss

Swamp Thing: New Zealand Blues Rock, Louisiana Style

Together Michael Barker and Grant Haua form Swamp Thing, a bluesy swamp rock band all the way from New Zealand. Recently they paid a visit to Louisiana through a cultural exchange made possible by Eric Holowacz and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. This gave the band an opportunity to visit the region that had substantially influenced their sound.

While in Louisiana, the band toured the region, played at some popular venues in and near Baton Rouge like The Brickyard, Phil Brady’s, and Teddy’s Juke Joint. They befriended the locals and invited a few of them to play along with them at their shows. During their Louisiana visit, the band even had time to shoot a music video in Baton Rouge. Before heading back to New Zealand, Michael, the band’s singer, drummer, and percussionist, set aside some time to do an interview for The nsavides Podcast.

Among other things, we discuss the rich musical traditions of Louisiana, how to develop an artistic voice, and the strange appeal of swamps.
