New Orleanian Larry Blake has been supervising the post-production sound on Steven Soderbergh’s films since 1989, when sex, lies, and videotape came out. Over 25 years later their collaboration is still going strong, most recently on HBO’s Behind the Candelabra (for which he won an Emmy) and two seasons of Cinemax’s series The Knick.
In this episode, Larry shares some stories behind the sound editing and mixing of Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven, Solaris, Syriana, and Magic Mike XXL. (All these films were sound edited and mixed at his New Orleans-based company, Swelltone Labs.) He also touches on how Pro Tools changed the industry, shares stories about classic Hollywood films, and gives tips on budgeting and planning for sound on films large and small.
