<p>The <strong>SXSW Conference and Festivals</strong> that happens each year in Austin has three components: film, music, and interactive. Essentially it is three distinct festivals combined into one massive event that happens each March. This year I was able to get a press pass to do coverage for the podcast. Even with a few days of prep, it was still a challenge to stay on top of everything happening at SXSW 2017, but I gave it the ol&#8217; college try.</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1446" data-permalink="https://podcast.nsavides.com/sxsw-2017-podcast-coverage-part-film-interviews/sxsw-2017c/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/podcast.nsavides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/SXSW-2017c.png?fit=1024%2C512&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,512" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="SXSW 2017" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/podcast.nsavides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/SXSW-2017c.png?fit=300%2C150&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/podcast.nsavides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/SXSW-2017c.png?fit=1024%2C512&amp;ssl=1" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1446" src="https://i0.wp.com/podcast.nsavides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/SXSW-2017c.png?resize=1024%2C512" alt="The nsavides Podcast coverage of SXSW 2017" width="1024" height="512" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/podcast.nsavides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/SXSW-2017c.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/podcast.nsavides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/SXSW-2017c.png?resize=300%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" />This podcast episode includes most of the film-related interviews I was able to get at the festival or shortly after it concluded. The interviews are a little shorter than usual so as to allow for a sampling of perspectives.</p>
<p>Part II will include music and interactive-related interviews and my concluding thoughts about the festival experience. It&#8217;s not a definite account by any means, just my subjective take on what stuck out for me. I will also share some of the ups and downs I faced as honestly as I can, which I hope will provide some perspective on the festival experience that goes beyond what straight reporting can convey.</p>
<p>The guests in this episode include</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0653056/"><strong>Mike Ott</strong></a>, director of<em> California Dreams &#8211; <span style="color: #ff0000;">s</span></em><span style="color: #ff0000;">tarts at 4:23</span>. <p>In New Orleans, the Professional Sound Services office is run by<strong> Justin Ditch</strong> and <strong>Lukas Gonzales</strong>, accomplished audio professionals in their own right. They both set aside some time to show us some of the equipment they offer and share tips on how to record better audio.</p>
<p>I shot and edited a video of their demonstration. In the video, we learn:</p>
<ul>
<li>a specific kind of boompole that can make things easier for a boom operator</li>
<li>what kind of sound recorder and mixer is right for the job</li>
<li>the benefits of using high-end wireless microphones</li>
<li>when to use a stereo microphone or a short shotgun, and more</li>
</ul>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>To go along with the video, I&#8217;ve included an audio track below where I talk more about the making of the video, specifically some of my insecurities and mistakes that came up while I was working on it. I actually had a certain mindset that almost killed the project, and it took me some effort to plow through. From what I&#8217;ve seen and read, it&#8217;s a mindset that impedes a number of creative types, so I thought I&#8217;d share it with you, in case it helps:</p>
