Split is a critically acclaimed psychological thriller from M. Night Shyamalan that came out in 2016. It is a story about a man with 23 split personalities. This episode is not about that film, at least not entirely. It is mostly about another film called Split that also came out in 2016. This one happens to be a romantic comedy set amidst the bowling community, directed by Jamie Buckner.
When Jamie is not working on his own projects, he works as a production coordinator on a variety of film and TV shows. This has given him the opportunity to learn from world-class filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Nora Ephron, and Cameron Crowe.
Jame is a bowling enthusiasm and a fan of romantic comedies, and he was able to combine both in his first feature film, Split. On this podcast episode, we discuss some of the projects has Jamie worked on as a production coordinator, what went into making Split, and the merits of the romantic comedy as a genre.
Filmmaking Takeaways
- Feeding others well can encourage a sense of family on set.
- Being a crew member is a great way to learn from world-class filmmakers.
- Doing a fun take allows the actors a chance to improvise moments that might make it into the film.
- Connect with the communities that relate to your story, and they might help you strengthen your film’s niche appeal.
- Managing audience expectations becomes more complicated when your film has the same name as a popular film in a different genre.
- The main characters in a romantic comedy usually have some kind of underlying issue that keeps them apart and doesn’t get resolved until the end of a film. In my concluding comments, I explore how that works in these romantic comedies: It Happened One Night, The Philadelphia Story, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and Silver Linings Playbook.
